Volume Thrasher Bike Check
Jan 2011 30

Here’s the bike check for my new Volume Thrasher. I had some fun on my ESB, but I have to say, it feels amazing to be on a fixed freestyle set up that actually FITS, and I must say, it fits perfectly. I feel so solid on this bike, and I’m loving it already! I have got to give a HUGE HUGE thanks to Volume for getting me on board, and Resist for helping me out with the build. I’m beyond pumped to continue working with Volume Bikes. Thanks again so much!

    It's a sick build!

Great build only thing I don't like is the chain…I think a pink half link would complete this bike

  3. Devan Mickell says:

Ha, I'm not a big fan of colored chains, but I will be switching that heavy duty one out fairly soon.

its a pretty badass thrasher, that gear ratio isnt to high is it? I run a 39/17 on mine with 165mm cranks and it feels alright.

  5. Devan Mickell says:

Yea, it's a fairly easy gear ratio. Definitely a lot easier than that on my track bike, and it's certainly catered more toward freestyle than riding fast. A 33×13 is more comparable to a 39×15 (ish) though, so it's a bit higher than what you're running.

Hey there! I was just wondering how tall you were, I'm thinking of getting a small Thrasher as well but pretty wary as I've not actually seen one in real life. (even with the specs available) I'm a girl standing at only 5'2". Hope to get some advice.

Anyway, your setup is pretty wicked, loving all the Volume & Resist components!

  7. Devan Mickell says:

I'm not quite that short (5'5"), but I have a longer torso/shorter legs so my stand over is really low. I've had a lot of bikes that were too big for me, and I love how the Thrasher fits. I'd definitely recommend it, but it really depends on your stand over height.

    And thanks!

    To anonymous:

a small thrasher even with 26" will more than likely be too big for you. for a fixed freestyle frame, the only company i've found with a bike smaller than a 47cm. the new SE PK Ripper is a 44cm and has clearance for wide tires. i think the alloy frame is tough enough for smaller riders. have fun!

  9. Devan Mickell says:

I'd look at something 26" specific. A few companies are coming out with 26" specific frames, and they're definitely smaller than everything else that's already out there. I'll be trying out the Volume Vandal next time they do a run, might want to wait a bit for that to come out…

  10. Dale says:

I know this is a bit of an old post, but i recently picked up some 26″ wheels for my small thrasher, so i was wondering if you had any tire recommendations for the rear?

  11. Devan says:

It just depends on what size tire you want to run. I prefer smaller ones than most people (1.5-1.75), and I haven’t really found any great options in those sizes. So there’s nothing I can recommend just yet. There are a lot more options above 2.0, but I haven’t tried any of those out for myself. I’m planning on getting some Resist tires once they come out in 26″, which should be soon.
